love letter

love letter is a sculptural piece on which you can pen your own sentiments of love. The “letter” itself is a light source, consisting of a bi-directional electroluminescent film that gives off light from both sides and has a surface that you can white on with a dry erase marker (or something more permanent if you are feeling committed!). The quality of light is soft, similar to candle light – just enough to keep you company.

love letter was originally created as a gesture of thanks and admiration to Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, in tribute to the inspiration that the Castiglioni brothers have given to the world through the ingenuity and emotion of their designs. The making of love letter started with a found object, marble cores, a byproduct in the making of the famous Arco lamp that the Castiglioni brothers designed for Flos in 1962. Arco has been well loved, and in continuous production ever since. molo’s love letter to the Castiglioni brothers is made with the actual marble core from the making of Arco.

In the spirit of play, delight, and the contagious influence of another great designer Ingo Maurer, we have created another variation of the love letter light. This one uses wool felt rocks (another manufacturing byproduct) as its base, and has the electroluminescent letter perched on a longer steel wire. The letter can slide to different positions along the wire, giving the lamp differing postures and an animated personality.

As the power source to the electroluminescent film is low voltage (DC 12v), we have chosen to leave the inner workings of the power inverter open to display as a mini cityscape, rather than hiding this away inside a black box. There is a playful addition to this “cityscape” that makes each light unique.

North American models come with a standard 120v power adaptor. Models for use in other regions come with a power adaptor that will accept 100-240v (50-60HZ), with a “type A” plug shape (2 flat parallel prongs). An inexpensive adaptor would be required to convert the plug shape to other standards.
