paper softwall expands to form a beautiful, freestanding wall that can be arranged into almost any shape, or easily compressed into a compact sheaf and stored away. paper softwall is made entirely of a lightweight tissue paper, granting it an airy, delicate beauty, yet it has surprising resilience. It is the honeycomb geometry of the softwall structure that gives it strength and allows an impressive use of a very modest amount of material. Like the textile version, paper softwall is bounded by thick wool felt ends, which fold to create handles when the wall is open, and form a protective cover when the wall is compressed.

The white version of paper softwall is translucent; light falling onto the softwall from windows or light fixtures is absorbed and contained within its layers, giving off an inner luminosity similar to a block of snow or ice. The black paper softwall is opaque, and has a completely different influence on a space, being a rich, saturated, inky black with a subtle sheen, reminiscent of charred wood.

All versions of paper softwall can be readily expanded from a mere 40mm (1.5cm) to form a freestanding wall of anywhere between 2000mm to 5000mm in length (6.5’ – 16.5’). The 1830mm tall paper softwall can provide a dynamic partition, or sculptural backdrop, whereas the 1220mm tall version is perfect for creating a sense of privacy and calm in a sitting area for working, dining or lounging, while allowing for an open feeling to the space.

custom paper softwall can be ordered to any height up to 3050mm (10’). Because of its size, custom paper softwall may require up to four people to help with the initial opening. softwall moves best when it can glide on a smooth, clean, dry surface. When not in use, all paper softwalls can be stored away flat, or folded in half.

stacking paper softwall offers an alternative to custom softwall for building to heights of up to 3050mm (10’) tall. A wall of any length and formation can be constructed as a series of layers stacked upon one another in horizontal courses like soft accordion structure. While custom paper softwall can be used to create a monolithic partition of similar heights, stacking paper softwall offers the further ability to add texture and dynamic pattern of light and shadow to the structure, as well as the flexibility to vary height as desired.

softwall is not designed to support weight, or to be altered. The paper softwall can be dusted, or lightly vacuumed with a brush handle, but should not be allowed to get wet.  The paper body of softwall is treated with a fire retardant, and will not maintain a flame. paper softwall has passed the US standard “NFPA 701 - Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films” - 2004 Edition - Test Methods 1 and 2. This fire rating is consistent with the use of paper softwall in public occupancies. Nevertheless, paper softwall should be kept away from any open flame or heat source. A copy of the certificate of the NFPA 701 fire rating is available upon request.

paper softwall, while delicate, is resilient to normal handling, and should a tear in the paper occur, it can be mended to conceal and protect the affected area.
